There are rules to match your watch to your outfit. A men’s watch is a small part of your outfit, but arguably the most important accessory. Imagine attending a black-tie affair, looking fly in your tux, only to have your whole outfit ruined by lifting your sleeve and revealing a G-Shock watch. What would others think of you? Nothing against digital watches, but that’s an inappropriate time to be sporting one.
This guide will teach you which type of watch to wear with every outfit.

1. Wear a formal watch during formal occasions
Formal watches are generally analog with a black or brown leather band. Gold or silver bands are appropriate in business casual outfits, but not black-tie.
Digital watches are appropriate for casual/sport wear.
In case you didn’t know, analog watches have the traditional “hands” that move from number to number. Digital watches have an LCD or LED display that displays time in a HH:MM:SS format.

2. Match the color of your leather band to the color of your leather accessories
The general rule is to match your wristband with your leather shoes and belt. If you have black shoes and belt, wear a formal watch with a black leather band. If you have brown shoes and belt, wear a formal watch with a brown leather band. See Men’s Belt Guide for more information.
3. Match the color of the watch’s metal to the color of your accessories
If you’re wearing a metal watch, make sure it somewhat matches the color of your accessories. Accessories include cufflinks, tie bars, rings, belt buckles, and other jewelery.
4. Heirloom watches are an exception to the rule
Due to the unique nature of heirloom timepieces, this is an exception to the rule. You can wear these watches in any situation, even formal. They are a timeless accessory that’s meant to be worn and shown off on occasion.
5. When in doubt, match the color of your watch to your shoes
- Black leather is more formal than brown. Both are appropriate for formal occasions, but black is a bit fancier.
- Silver watches match best with shoes in black, gray, silver, and blue shades. Gold watches go with browns, beiges, tans, and other earth tones.
